Little Tanvi’s Story

A Beginning That Asked for Courage

When Reeta went into early delivery at just 32 weeks, nothing felt certain. Her baby girl was born small, weighing only 1.6 kg, and needed immediate care to help her breathe and adjust to the world outside. The beginning of their parenting journey was spent in the NICU, where Reeta and Anil stayed close by as their baby received the care she needed.

The couple had travelled from Uttar Pradesh to Mumbai in search of work. Anil worked as a construction labourer, taking up any job he could find, while Reeta managed the home. Their lives were already filled with challenges, far from family support, living on a fragile income, and coping with the illness of Reeta’s mother, who was undergoing cancer treatment at the time.

At Wadia Hospital, their daughter received specialised care, including ventilator support, under the watchful eyes of the medical team. Those early days were not easy. Every update from the doctors mattered deeply, and the parents learned quickly that progress in the NICU comes in small, quiet steps.

As the hospital bills began to rise, the family struggled to find a way forward. They had already borrowed money from friends and relatives and felt overwhelmed by the uncertainty. That’s when Neonates Foundation of India (NFI) stepped in, helping ease the burden so their baby could continue receiving care without interruption.

Even after discharge, life continued to test their strength. During follow-ups by the NFI BEN-I team, it became clear how difficult the family’s situation remained. Reeta’s mother sadly passed away, and soon after, doctors discovered a hole in the baby’s heart, and she was readmitted to Wadia Hospital, where she underwent surgery.

Today, the picture looks very different. Now five months old and lovingly named Tanvi, she is active, alert, and doing well. The BEN-I team stays connected with the family, sending hampers and clothes, and the parents recently shared pictures of a smiling Tanvi wearing them, a small but beautiful reminder of how far she has come.

Tanvi’s journey isn’t just about survival; it’s about the quiet courage of a tiny baby, of parents who refused to give up, and of a community that came together at the right time.
